SHILLONG, SEPT 21: Opposition Congress legislator from Mawlai Process T Sawkmie today asked the state government to bring an official resolution to urge the Centre for inclusion of the Khasi and Garo language in the Eight Schedule to the Constitution of India.
During the first day of the Assembly session here on Friday, Sawkmie raised a point of order to make the demand which also interrupted the chief minister Conrad K Sangma, while he was introducing important Bills in the House.
“I urge the state government to bring an official resolution both for Khasi and Garo language during this current session,” he said.
According to him, a big rally called by the Khasi Authors Society (KAS) will be held in the state capital tomorrow.
However, the chief minister, who did not give any assurance on the matter, told the opposition member that he should understand how the procedure (of raising point of order) follows since the time allotted at the moment was only for government business.
“You (Sawkmie) have to have a point to raise the point of order but there is no point. The member must realise the procedure how it follows, right now we are in government business and we are discussing important issues, there will be time to discuss on the issue he raised which is also important but right now we are in the process of introducing Bills. I think he should understand that,” Sangma said.
Earlier, the Speaker assured to examine the request of the opposition member for allotting more time for discussion on the various important issues to be raised during the session.
