SHILLONG, SEP 2: Cabinet minister and BJP legislator from Pynthorumkhrah AL Hek has said implementation of the ‘one nation, one election’ will ensure there is no more wasting of the country’s wealth.
Speaking to reporters, Hek said at present, the country is witnessing 3-4 elections being held every year and this has to a great extent drained out its economy.
“Therefore, if you have one nation, one election, we are free to rule for the next five years and then we don’t drain out or we don’t waste our economy. (There will be) no waste of wealth,” he said.
“As of now, we have to spend every year only for conducting elections – MDC elections, MLA elections, municipal elections, panchayat elections, Lok Sabha elections – there is no end to elections,” he added.
On Friday, the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) had slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s proposal for ‘one nation, one election’ and said that the underlying motives is to transform India from a democracy into a theocracy, favouring the Hindutva ideology and the establishment of a Hindu Rashtra.
When sought for his reaction on this, the BJP legislator however said, “India is built on unity in diversity. I am Indian, I am Christian. I don’t agree as some people are there who are trying to sow the seeds of hatred in society.”
“We cannot say because of one-two people they want to make hindutva no. There are some people you will find in every community and society, even in religious groups…who want to sow the seeds of hatred in the society,” he said.
