SHILLONG, SEPT 23: Extraction of uranium as well as setting up of nuclear power plant can play a crucial role in meeting the ever increasing power demand faced by Meghalaya, echoed students participating at a Seminar held at the Laban Bengalee Boy’s Higher Secondary School (LBBHSS) on Monday.
The seminar was inaugurated by RMSA joint project director Dr RS Laurit.
Giving a presentation at seminar on “Nuclear Energy: Its issues and challenges”, a student from LBBHSS J Syiemlieh said, “Meghalaya has got abundant mineral resources including Uranium. If such mineral resources like, uranium can be extracted, as well as setting of nuclear power plant it can serve a great deal in increasing the power production of the state besides supplying it to other parts of the country.”
Syiemlieh said, “We are living in a world of advance technology where the demand for electricity has been increasing day by day. “Setting of nuclear power plant is the need of the hour.”
Syiemlieh said that the advantage from uranium, is that it produce 10 million times electricity than what is produce by the thermal and hydro power plant. He informed that the nuclear power plant can produce electricity that can serve for a very longer period.
On the negative aspect, Syiemlieh. However, said, “The installation of nuclear power plant if not taken care can produce radioactive radiation which is harmful to the environment besides leakage can cause deadly effect.”
Echoing similar views, S Deb from St Xavier said uranium is harmful but if use properly can benefit the state and the nation. She said there are over 50,000 nuclear power plants across the world.
India ranks sixth in production of nuclear power besides USA which is first in the world followed by France and Japan ,Deb said.
Students from at least six schools including St Edmunds, St Xavier School participated at the annual seminar organized by the LBBHSS.
A student from St Edmunds was of the view that the use of nuclear energy can to a great extent replace the use of petroleum which are already exhaustive besides it can also address the issue of global warming.
Pointing out the nuclear attack on Nakazaki Hiroshima, Japan in 1947, he said, “If nuclear energy is misused it can have a severe impact on human life which nations should avoid.”- By Our Reporter
