SHILLONG, FEB 4: Even as NPP leader Conrad Sangma predicted a hung assembly, UDP working president Bindo M Lanong said his party will bag not less than twenty seats in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly and form the next government even as it said that the Congress must be prepared to sit in the opposition.
Sangma told reporters Monday that despite claims by the ruling Congress and UDP no party will come will even get a one-third majority in the house. He said coalition politics, which has become a hallmark of the state, will continue.
NPP Meghalaya unit president WR Kharlukhi, while blaming the Congress for creating instability in the state, said the Congress will suffer a jolt in the coming election because of inner-party factionalism and wrong choice of candidates. He said these will be a boon for the NPP.
The NPP is fielding 33 candidates in the 60 member assembly. Conrad said the party is also having an informal tie-up with several Independent candidates.
Lanong, on the other hand, said that the UDP will form a coalition government with like-minded parties as it will get around twenty seats..
According to Lanong, the UDP \will get four seats in Ri Bhoi district, four from Shillong city, four from Jaintia hills, six from Garo hills region and a total of eight seats from both West and East Khasi hills districts.
Lanong also pooh-poohed the Congress claim that the UDP is having internal bickering within its leaders and said unlike the Congress the UDP is united.
Lanong is also confident of winning his elections from East Shillong constituency against Congress candidate and minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.- By Our Reporter
