SHILLONG, SEPT 22: The National People’s Party (NPP) o Monday sought intervention of the centre by deploying three companies of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for aiding the state government in rescue operation in flood and landslide ravaged areas of Garo Hills region.
Unconfirmed report said at least 30 people have lost their lives after floods and landslides occurred due to incessant rainfall for the past 48 hours. However officially the figure of flood related deaths have so far been 12 which officials said is likely to increase.
“We request the Centre to immediately deploy three companies of NDRF to the state especially in Garo Hills region,” NPP national president and Tura MP Purno Agitok Sangma said in his letter to the Union Minister of Home Affairs Raj Nath Singh on Monday.
Sangma said, “Since the flood situation is very grave, it is needless to mention that the assistance of central government is required immediately.”According to him, most of the low lying areas in every district in Garo hills have been submerged under water.
“Reportedly, 10 people are missing and a large number of people have been displaced,” Sangma said adding “People are finding shelter on rooftops and places which are above the water level.”
Sangma urged the centre to alert the BSF and CRPF besides other para military forces to provide all help and assistance to the district administration and state government. He added supply of essential commodities is also required immediately.- By Our Reporter
