SHILLONG, JUNE 19: Opposition National People’s Party (NPP) on Sunday opposed the alleged move of the Congress led state government to privatise the Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL). “We condemned and will strongly oppose any such move to privatise MCCL,” NPP spokesperson James K Sangma said in a statement.
He was reacting to reports quoting the chief minister Mukul Sangma who had said he is keen to privatise the MCCL, which at present is facing huge financial crisis.
According to James, the party believes that the health of MCCL will improve provided that the government gives more time and attention to the working of the plant in a bid to increase production and reduce costs.
He said such move on the part of Mukul Sangma goes to show that the Congress government was intentionally holding back the MCCL from reaching its full potential with an eye to sell it to a private company one day.
James said the blame for the poor performance of the MCCL has been unnecessarily put on the employees who have been forced to opt for Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).-By Our Reporter
