SHILLONG, JULY 12: The state unit of National People’s Party (NPP) will be electing its new president at state annual convention to be held shortly even as it said it is open to pre-poll alliance with likeminded political parties.
The decision was taken at the state executive committee meeting of the NPP held on Tuesday in the city. The meeting was also attended by party’s national president Conrad K Sangma, also newly elected MP of Tura.
Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Conrad said, “We have decided to have the state annual convention for electing the new president of the state NPP which is likely to be held either in November or October.”
Informing that the party has also held discussion on the upcoming 2018 state elections, Conrad said, “We are open to alliance with likeminded political parties in the state.”
When asked, the NPP national president claimed that the party has received a positive response with regards to pre-poll alliance. While refusing to divulge the names of such parties, he said, “The message we would like to give as NPP is that we need to keep an open mind on the issue.”
Admitting that the issue is a complicated process, he however said in the meantime, the state party has been asked to reorganize all its units at the level of the district and block committees.
He further informed that the party has also decided to soon come up with the ‘vision document’ for the upcoming 2018 state polls.
“We have decided to set up the vision document committee, which would be notified soon for the benefits of Meghalaya. The document will underline the priorities and vision of the state NPP,” Conrad said.
Meanwhile, the state NPP also claimed that in the recent past many senior leaders of the Congress and other parties have joined the party. Two former senior Congress leaders, who have recently joined the party include FW Momin and L Nongsiang.
