SHILLONG, MAR 6: The National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has projected United Democratic Party’s Supremo Donkupar Roy for the Speaker’s post an election of which will be held on March 12.
Confirming this here on Wednesday, UDP leader Allantry F Dkhar said an official decision was already taken that the party president Donkupar Roy will contest for the Speaker’s post of the tenth Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The ruling coalition government has the strength of 36 members which include 19 NPP, 6 UDP, 4 PDF, 2 HSPDP, 2 BJP, 1 NCP, and two Independents – Samuel M Sangma and Lambor Malngiang.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress which is having on 21 MLAs has also named Salmanpara legislator Winnerson D Sangma as its nominee to contest for the post of a Speaker.
The decision was taken at the party’s CLP meeting held today, which also appointed Mawsynram MLA Himalaya Shangpliang as its secretary.
“We have decided that Winnerson D Sangma will be the nominee for the post of the Speaker,” Congress spokesman Zenith Sangma, also a former minister, told journalists here.
Asked whether the party is expecting some kind of a miracle, Zenith replied on the positive and said, “Yes. Politicking is a continuous process, as and when time comes for any party to do anything that time any political party will take advantage.”
Also expressing confidence, the party spokesman said in politics there is ups and down and number game is always there in politics. “In the election, we sometime lose and win. Political party who loses also don’t give up taking advantage of the situation,” he added.
Reacting to a query, he said the Mukul Sangma, who was re-elected as the CLP leader of the party is also the Leader of Opposition.
