SHILLONG, MAY 20: NPP state working president and cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak on Wednesday rejected BJP leader and Tura MDC Bernard N Marak’s allegation of a nexus between Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and former Phulbari legislator Esmatur Mominin, calling it “totally baseless” and “misleading.”
The BJP leader had alleged a nexus after Mominin was recently granted bail. Responding to the charge, Marcuise said the judiciary functions independently of the executive. “So bail was given by whom? Is it Chief Minister who has given the bail? No, it is not chief minister, the bail was given by the court,” he said.
“So why don’t he ask the court there saying that chief minister is favouring. It is totally baseless, it is totally unacceptable statement. This statement was given just to mislead the people.” He stressed the constitutional separation of powers. “Practically in our democracy, executive, judiciary are totally separate entities. Constitutionally, judiciary don’t listen to the executive.”
Marcuise added that the government itself has matters before the courts. “Even we have lots of cases pending in court which we are fighting but Bernard Marak is accusing chief minister favouring him because he got bail.” “That is totally unacceptable, totally misleading as it is the judiciary which has decided to give the bail based on what, we don’t know. Therefore, it is total baseless allegation,” he said.
