SHILLONG, DEC 11: National People’s Party (NPP) legislator ECB Bamon demanded the institution of an ‘inquiry’ to probe into the alleged setting up of illegal collection gates by the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) within its jurisdiction.
“We demanded the government to set up an inquiry into the illegal collection of taxes by the JHADC through the two gates erected illegally in Shangpung and Nartiang,” Bamon said Tuesday in the assembly.
However home minister who also holds charge of district council affairs HDR Lyngdoh said JHADC is collecting taxes within its jurisdiction under the different laws made on different subjects as empowered under the sixth schedule to the constitution of India with the assent of the Governor.
However Bamon contested saying that there is no provision that empowers the JHADC to erect collection gates and imposed collection within its own jurisdiction.
Bamon said setting up the two gates by the district council is totally illegal and is harassment to the people. He said, “It is illegal as the matter was never brought for the approval in the floor of the assembly besides there is no law that allows the district council to set up such collection gates.”
Bamon, therefore, demanded a probe into the illegal setting up of the two gates and collection of taxes by the JHADC within its jurisdiction.
Lyngdoh assured Bamon that the matter will be verified and necessary action will be taken.- By Our Reporter
