SHILLONG, JAN 16: Opposition National People’s Party (NPP- Bajengdoba Block Committee (BBC) demanded that the Mukul led coalition government hold the elections of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) immediately. The GHADC term expired last year but the government extended to another six months which is the third extensions.
“We demanded immediate holding of the council election as per schedule and restore the rule of law and install popular executive committee in GHADC at the earliest,” NPP-BBC general secretary Marwein N Sangma said.
The decision to demand holding of the GHADC elections was taken at the executive meeting of the block committee held recently.
Sangma informed that the block committee also strongly condemned the ‘unconstitutional’ decision of the state government to extend the term of the GHADC for another six months.
The term of the GHADC expired on February last year but was extended thrice by the government.
Sangma also alleged, “The Congress is holding on to power in GHADC through backdoor and clinging to power even after the term of the council expired a year ago.” According to him, the Congress had won only 6 seats in 2009 GHADC elections and is now running the council with defected MDCs from NPP, erstwhile NCP.
Lambasting the Mukul Sangma government for what he termed as “murder of democracy in Garo hills” Sangma said, “It is time that people are given the opportunity to elect their new popular representatives of their choice and get rid of the undeserving unfriendly MDCs that are enjoying the public funds at the cost of the public.”
The NPP also decided to go for massive enrollment drive and targeted to enroll at least 15,000 primary members to the party in 2015 and revamp the existing primary units.- By Our Reporter
The party also decided to form election working committees for the district council polling stations under Bajengdoba, he said.- By Our Reporter
