Shillong, Sept 21: After the GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma revealed that the militant outfit will support the Congress in 2013 assembly election, Opposition leader and National People’s Party (NPP) leader Conrad K Sangma has demanded that the Congress come out clean on the “support issue” by the militant leader.
Speaking to reporter Friday, Sangma said, “It was a big surprise to see the GNLA offering support to the Congress party.” He said that the NPP felt that the Congress party should come out clear stand on the offer of support by the GNLA.
The GNLA chairman had openly declared his “support” to the Congress party in the five Garo hills districts and told the media that he has directed his cadres to support the Congress in the forthcoming assembly election and not to disturb the election process.
Presently the militant chief is in jail as he was arrested on July 30.
Even as Conrad Sangma said that he should not be commenting on how the Congress party take’s the offer but it needs to clarify on the support that it is likely to get from the outfit.
The offer of support by the GNLA to Congress has kick off the much debated “politician-militant” nexus topic in Meghalaya.
Meanwhile AICC leaders in charge of Meghalaya made it clear that the party is not all interested in the support offered by the outfit. “The party is not interested in the unsolicited support extended by a violent organization like the GNLA,” AICC Secretary in charge of Meghalya Sanjay Bapna told over phone.
However commenting on the decision of the militant leader to contest the election, Bapna said, there is nothing wrong if any organization wants to be part of the democratic and political process.. He said militant organization or leaders contesting election cases has happened in many states like Mizoram, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Assam where groups have shun violence to owe allegiance to the country’s constitution.- By Our Reporter
