SHILLONG, MAY 21: The National People’s Party (NPP) on Saturday challenged chief minister Mukul Sangma to wipe out the party by advancing the assembly election that is slated to be held on 2018to this year. The party also termed Sangma as a ‘natural loser.’
“He (Mukul) is a natural loser who always reacts when a team loses the game by putting the blame on the referee,” said NPP state president Dr WR Kharlukhi while referring to the just concluded Tura bye-elections as ‘football match’.
Kharlukhi said there are two categories of people – one who speaks and think and the other who thinks and speak.
The chief minister recently blamed the possibility of manipulation of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) which according to him led to the landslide defeat of the Congress in the Tura Lok Sabha bye-elections.
Newly elected Tura MP and NPP national president, Conrad Kongal Sangma defeated Congress candidate Dikkanchi D Shira, the Mahendraganj sitting legislator and CM’s wife by a whooping margin of over 1.93 votes.
The NPP had won from all 23 out of 24 assembly segments except from Ampati, the home constituency of the CM.
Pointing to the anti-BJP campaign, Dr Kharlukhi said, “The Congress attacked the BJP like attacking a person who is not even in the field. Like in a football game, the Congress was attacking the crowd instead of the opponent team (NPP).”
He said the NPP has taken note of the recent statement made by the chief minister wherein he had declared that the party will be wipe-out from Garo hills in the upcoming 2018 state elections.
Suggesting to the CM not to waste his time waiting till that time, the NPP state president said, “Since he wants to finish the NPP, we insist him to do in 2016 itself by dissolving the present house and go for advance state elections.”
When asked whether the party is challenging the CM, he however said, “In fact he (CM) was the one who threw this challenge and we are just accepting and acknowledging it.”
Admitting that that sympathy vote is one of the major factors that contributed to the massive victory since late Purno Agitok Sangma had been a leader for over 3 decades, Kharlukhi said, “The other factors is because Conrad is seen as a future leader and one who would inherit the legacy of his father.”
Meanwhile, the NPP has also thanked the people of Garo Hills for the impressive mandate they had given to the party’s candidate in the bye-election.
“We congratulated the people of Garo Hills despite of the money power, the Congress could not swing them to their side,” he said while referring to seizure of huge amount of money during the by poll.
He however lamented that the problem in India is that despite having a law, it never prevails and said it is time to ensure that the law should prevail and such persons should be persecuted.
Stating that people who use money will never bring in development, the NPP leader also said that it is time that the people of Khasi and Jaintia Hills learn from what happen in Garo Hills.
The party also thanked the regional parties – Garo National Council (GNC), United Democratic Party (UDP), Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for their support.-By Our Reporter
