NPP appoints youth president

ratika 1SHILLONG, SEPT 5: The National People’s Party (NPP) has appointed an indigenous rights activist from Manipur Ratika Yumnam as the national youth president with immediate effect.

Ratika Yumnam graduated with triple majors in Media Studies, Psychology and Literature from Christ University, Bangalore and completed her Masters in South Asian Studies from the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, University of Oxford, UK in the year 2014. She has also been working as an Indigenous Rights Activist, based in North East India for the past 4 years. She has been actively involved in Action Research and Advocacy in the areas of human rights and indigenous peoples in the Northeast region of India. Over the years, Ms Yumnam has helped in facilitating workshops and training programs for the youth in terms of peace building and conflict resolution, gender and power relations, human rights and sustainable development.

She has represented the voice of indigenous communities of Northeast in United Nations during the 5th UN Forum on Business and Human Rights at Geneva, Switzerland.  She has been trained in several human rights programs such as the 25th Asia Pacific Human Rights and Peoples Diplomacy Training Program organized by DTP Australia at Sri Lanka; Feminist Leadership, Movement Building and Rights Institute – South Asia training program organized by CREA, Kathmandu, Nepal, Regional Capacity Building Program on United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, organized by Diplomacy Training Program and Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact, Chiangmai, Thailand.

She was also among the 6 Indigenous Rights Activist from across the globe to be selected for scholarship by the Swiss Development Agency for the Business, Conflict & Human Rights Training, organized by Swisspeace at University of Basel, Switzerland.
