No move to change present leadership in Congress: Ronnie

SHILLONG, MAR 30: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh has said there is no move to change the leadership of the party in the state.

He was reacting to a query if the party will change the incumbent MPCC president and Shillong MP Vincent H Pala following the poor performance of the Congress in the recently concluded Assembly polls. Pala was defeated by NPP’s Santa Mary Shylla from Sutnga-Saipung constituency.

The party got only 5 seats in the 59-member House.

Lyngdoh however said it is not fair to hold a single person responsible for the poll debacle.

“It is not right as responsibility has to be taken by the entire organization instead of blaming everything on the leader,” he added.

Lyngdoh said that the defeat of the state president is because the election now is not only confined to issues.

“People may want a change but when it is time to decide there are many factors that come into play to fool or mislead them,” he said.

The CLP leader said that Congress votes got divided after 17 MLAs left the party ahead of 2023 polls. He cited the case of East Shillong and said the party got only 2-3 months to decide on the candidate and yet he has given a tough fight.

“Had we got 1 year or 2 years to prepare, the result should have been otherwise,” he claimed.

Meanwhile, the Congress leader said that the party is gearing up its preparation for the upcoming autonomous district council (ADC) elections and Lok Sabha election.

“As the elections and Assembly session have just concluded, we will sit to decide but preparation is not an issue for the party as the Congress already has a proper set up as in all constituencies we have the block congress committees and primary units,” he said.
