SHILLONG, NOV 1: The National Khasi Union (NKU) on Tuesday expressed its opposition against the proposed land acquisition by the Assam Rifles at Lawbyrwa village in Ri Bhoi district. The decision was taken at an emergent meeting of the union held recently. “We strongly oppose the proposed land acquisition by the Assam Rifles at Lawbyrwa,” NKU president Sylvanus Malai said.
He said that the way to Lawbyrwa consists of many adjoining villages which would create problems in the near future among the defence personnel and the general populace causing law and order situations.
According to him, the primary concern of the NKU is the overall welfare of the public, and Ri Bhoi district in general.
Stating that the union is not against the defence authority and its activities, Malai however said, “But using the same thoroughfare shall cause inconvenience to the general public.”
The union further suggested that the Assam Rifles should instead try to look out for areas which are directly accessible by the National Highway and does not contain any kind of habitation within the vicinity of its area.
“This would be the most feasible and viable option for Assam Rifles eliminating all kinds of possible conflicts that may arise between the villagers and defence personnel thereby making way for a conducive atmosphere,” he said.-By Our Reporter
