SHILLONG, JUNE 25: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) on Tuesday decided to go ahead with the three-day night road-blockade to protest against the nonchalant attitude of the state government towards their demands. The 7 pm to 5 am road blockade will be effective in the entire West Jaintia hills district from June 26 to June 28.
The decision came as the deadline the JSU had served to the government expired. The JSU has been demanding for immediate up-gradation of the Jowai Civi lHospital, setting up of blood bank and making the Ialong Civil hospital functional.
The JSU said several memorandums were submitted to the government on the same issue since 2002 but all were ignored. The union demanded upgradation of Jowai Civil Hospital to a state hospital to cater to the medical needs of the growing population from urban and rural areas. JSU president Rikut N Parien said, “At present, due to lack of medicines, staffs and qualified specialized doctors, poor people are forced to take treatment from private clinics and hospitals in Jowai and Shillong which are expensive.”- By Our Reporter
