JH:Ngos threaten agitation

SHILLONG, DEC 10: Two ngos from Jaintia hills have threatened to launch agitations to protest against the state government’s delay in making public the inquiry reports into the Mookhep firing incident, which killed two civilians last year.

The decision to launch agitation was taken during a joint meeting between the Jaintia National Council (JNC) and the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM)-Jaintia hills on Thursday after the 10-day deadline served to government to make public the inquiry expired.

“We have decided to send a clear message to the state government that we are going to stage intensive agitations in the coming days so long the inquiry reports are not made public as demanded,” JNC chairman Sambormi Lyngdoh said.

He also informed the two ngos have decided to convene a meeting with the traditional heads from across the East Jaintia hills at Khliehriat West on December 21.

“We will be convening this meeting to discuss with the headmen on the failure of the state government despite the increasing demand from the people to make public the inquiry reports,” Lyngdoh said.

He said, “The meeting also aims at strengthening the agitations to pressurize the government to ensure that the officials responsible for issuing the order to fire and those executing the order should be terminated from their services.”

The two ngos appeal to the headmen of the district to extend their support and cooperation by attending the meeting.-By Our Reporter
