SHILLONG, OCT 6: Jaintia Hills based ngos on Thursday opposed the recent demand to remove the present deputy commissioner of West Jaintia Hills district Arunkumar Kembhavi. They also urged the centre government to speed up the construction of border fencing along the international border with Bangladesh which will go a long way in addressing the problem of illegal immigration into the state.
The three ngos-the Meghalaya People’s United Front (MPUF), the Khasi Jaintia National Union (KJNU) and the All Hynniewtrep People’s United Front (AHPUF)- said, “We strongly opposed the demand to remove the DC who has been serving in the district for only one and a half year.”
MPUF president Dapoiwanmi Laloo told reporters that the demand is uncalled for and the DC should be allowed to complete his full term mainly because of his competency and efficiency in addressing the problems faced by the people of the district.
Laloo said his (Kembhavi) in just a short span of time has been commendable in view that the district would soon implement the central sponsored solar energy scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 6.04 crore.
The DC was also instrumental in ensuring transparency in the job recruitments by the District Selection Committee (DSC) besides resolving the issues pertaining to waste management, hawkers and others, he said.
The Coordination Committee on International Border (CCIB) had demanded immediately remove the DC for his alleged anti-people action.
The demand came as a mark of protest against the imposition of section 186 of the IPC along the international Indo-Bangla border.
Maintaining that they are not against the CCIB and the problems faced by the border people, Laloo however said but the DC has no connection in as far as border fencing is concerned but is only following government’s order.
“We are also equally concern about the problems faced by the people residing along the border areas and would like to appeal to the CCIB to take the matter in the right platform,” he said.
The MPUF leader also emphasized the need to understand the importance of border fencing which will prevent illegal immigration from entering into the state. “We therefore demand that the centre to speed up the construction of the border fencing at the earliest,” he said.-By Our Reporter
