Shillong, Apr 9: Eight ngos stood their ground and asserted that the Meghalaya government must implement its demand of putting into operation the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya to check influx and illegal immigration and other mechanisms must only be supplementary to the ILP.
The eight ngos comprising of the KSU, FKJGP, RBYF, CSWO, AJYWO, HNYF, JSU and GSU had a meeting with chief minister Mukul Sangma on Tuesday evening wherein the ngos reminded Sangma of the High Level Committee (HLC) headed by former deputy chief minister Bindo M Lanong which had recommendation using ILP as one of the mechanism for controlling influx into Meghalaya.
After the meeting, FKJGP president Joe Marwein told reporters that the groups wanted the government to immediately implement the ILP as recommended by the committee.
Marwein said, “The committee, after having had threadbare discussions, came to the conclusion that the ILP was the best mechanism to check influx and illegal immigration. The system will also not impair the state’s development.”
Marwein also informed that Sangma had pointed to other mechanism for controlling influx but did make any adverse comment on ILP at the meetin.
The other mechanisms, which Sangma had presented before the groups include the setting up of the anti-infiltration directorate and to put in place a strong tenancy law.
“We demanded that the ILP should be introduced, and that these proposed mechanisms should be implemented as supplementary steps towards tackling the problems of influx,” HNYF general secretary Sadon Blah said.
Sangma has asked for more time to study the recommendations. – By Our Reporter
