SHILLONG, JAN 10: The thirteen pro Inner Line Permit (ILP) ngos have accepted the invitation of the state government for talks on the issue relating to influx slated for January 15.The decision to participate in the meeting was taken during a meeting of the ngos held on Friday.
Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) vice president Frederick Kharmawphlang said in a statement on Friday, “We have decided to participate in the discussion with an open mind provided that members of the groups can move freely as has been promised by the chief minister recently.”
The KSU is one among the thirteen ngos demanding for implementation of the ILP in the state..
However Kharmawphlang lamented that the police are still hunting the members of the ngos. He said, “It is unfortunate that till today the police have not stop their raids and arrest against the members of the different organizations.”
Stating that they need all the members to participate in the decision making and the discussion process as the ngos cannot come to a decision without a proper quorum, Kharmawphlang said, “We feel that the police department must be directed by the state government to resist from arresting ngos members to allow them to actively participate in the discussion on January 15.”
Kharmawphlang said, “The government should also in a gesture of good faith begin the process by releasing all the arrested members of all the different organizations without further delay.”
The state had witnessed series of bandhs, office picketing, road blockades during the three-month long agitations by launched by the ngos demanding implementation of the ILP. Over 71 ILP activists have been arrested and three lives were lost during the ILP agitations.- By Our Reporter
