TURA, DEC 14: North Garo Hills Vigilance Forum (NGHVF) on Monday came down heavily on the killing of Havildar Khomraj Bhattrai. The forum termed the killing as “unwanted.”
Bhattrai’s body was found on Friday. Rebel abducted him on November 6. His body was handed over to his family yesterday in North Garo hills. Police suspected that Bhattrai was abducted and killed by Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).
The forum also decried the kidnapping of the Khasi businessman Dinarsing Syiemlieh (69) who was kidnapped allegedly by Garo militants in West Khasi hills stating that the kidnapping has begun to erode friendly ties with Khasi brethren and posed a serious threat to the state.
“We severely condemn the killing of the policeman and express our heartfelt condolences to the family of the slain cop. We ourselves helped in recovering the body and want to say that the act was an unwanted one.”, said president of the Forum, Tengrak Marak.
Condemning the abduction of Khasi businessmen, the forum said, “These acts are putting a barrier on peaceful coexistence between the Garo and Khasi. We appeal for the immediate release of the kidnapped businessman”, said an activist of the forum Wilness Marak. “The state of education in Garo hills is poor which means that most aspiring students from Garo hills move to Shillong for their studies.
These kidnappings are threatening the very fabric of our peaceful co-existence while posing a threat to all those amongst us in Khasi Hhlls. The people behind the kidnapping should understand the situation and not aggravate relations further”, felt Sinbad Sangma, the general secretary of the forum.
The forum also appealed to all Khasi to show restraint at a time when Garo hills and its residents seek to come out of the biggest crisis faced by it. “We want to appeal to all to show restraint. We are struggling with the whole menace as much as they are and through our joint efforts things can be brought back to normal. We appeal for peace and calm from all”, Tengrak added.-From Our Correspondent
