Newly-elected 58 MLAs take oath of office

IMG_1808SHILLONG, MAR 7: All the 58 newly-elected legislators of the Tenth Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Wednesday took oath before the Pro-tem Speaker Timothy Shira at a special session held here.

 

Sixty-eight-year-old Shira is the oldest member of the House while a 25-year-old Dasakhiat Lamare is the youngest. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was also present during the taking oath ceremony

 

Of the 58 MLAs, 27 are newly elected legislators which include 9 from the NPP, 8 Congress, 4 PDF, two each from UDP and HSPDP, one KHNAM and one Independent.

 

Veteran politician and supremo of the United Democratic Party Donkupar Roy took oath for the seventh time as member of the legislative assembly.

 

Congress former chief minister, who was re-elected for the sixth time Mukul Sangma also took oath for the two seats – Ampati and Songsak.

 

James K Sangma, Prestone Tynsong, Sniawbhalang Dhar, Comingone Ymbon were among the leaders of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) who took oath of office and secrecy during the special session.

Congress legislators who took oath include Mukul’s wife Dikkanchi D Shira, her colleagues Ampareen Lyngdoh, MM Danggo, Zenith Sangma, Clement Marak, Winnerson D Sangma, and Charles Pyngrope.

 

The UDP MLAs who took oath are Metbah Lyngdoh, Brolding Nongsiej, Lahkmen Rymbui, Kyrmen Shylla and Nujorki Sungoh.

Two new HSPDP legislators Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Samlin Malngiang were also among the new faces to take oath.

 

Meanwhile, the NPP has projected former chief minister Donkupar Roy for the Speaker’s post, an election of which would be held on March 12.

 

On the other hand, the opposition Congress has also decided to put up a candidate for the post. Winnerson D Sangma was named as the opposition nominee after a meeting held here on Wednesday.
