Shillong, August 20: State Water Resources minister AL Hek inaugurated the “Langkyrding Mihngi Water Supply Scheme” Monday in a newly created village in the city.
Taken from the “spring water” at Synrang-maw as its main source, the work for the Rs 1.16 crore water supplies was started in 2009. It is estimated that with the inauguration of this scheme it will benefit around 300 household with “direct-home-connections”.
Speaking during the inauguration, Hek informed, “Since 2008-09, the matter of water scarcity in this part of the city was taken up with the government and also suggested that a different water supply schemes in must be explore to meet the demands of the people.”.
Hek said the government had sanctioned a total amount of Rs 364 crores for the implementation of these water supply schemes including Langkyrding”.
Regarding the water supply scheme in Pynthorbah, Hek informed that the village has just hand over the land to the concerned department and the Mawpat – Nongmynsong water supply scheme will take off within two months. He said these areas will also be included under the Rs 193 crores Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme.
Public Health Engineering (PHE) chief engineer SK Sunn informed the gathering that out \of the 300 household, so far only 200 households have registered for the direct home connection under the scheme”. He also appealed to the dorbar shnong not to allow rampant drilling as it might affect the water source. – By Our Reporter
