SHILLONG, JUNE 20: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma suggested signing an MoU between Meghalaya government, DRDO, CIPS and FICCI as implementing partner in the “bio digester toilet technology” after a presentation was made before him on Thursday by the DRDO in Delhi.
The DRDO has come up with an innovative technology for sanitation which can replace the conventional septic-tank model of sanitation by innovative bio-digester tanks using anaerobic microorganism which is superior but cheaper than the septic-tank model.
Sangma is reportedly impressed by the DRDO innovation and has asked the DRDO to come up with a concrete proposal for implementation in Meghalaya as he felt it can be effectively facilitated through appropriate policy adoption, building bye-laws and other legislation as may be required.
Sangma felt that the DRDO Bio digester technology is not just an alternative but provides a solution to sanitation problem. He said proper implementation is the key to success of this innovative technology and it is important that new innovative approach is required for adopting this technology and implementing it in states through convergence mechanisms.
Sangma also indicated during the presentation for identifying blocks and also cover villages under the Total Sanitation Program, with special focus on urban areas by devising policies. He was of the opinion that these pilot models shall help to showcase the success story of the new toilet technology and then replicate in the other areas and country.-By Our Reporter
