SHILLONG, JULY 8:  The newly appointed Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Peter James Pyngrope Hanaman said that he has some perspective on how to resolve the militancy problems in the five districts of Garo hills even as he stressed that in tackling the militancy problem a strong political will is needed.

Taking over the mantle of the Meghalaya DGP from the outgoing acting DGP Prem Singh on Monday, Hanaman told reporters after assuming the police chief office, “There should be political initiative that has to go along with what the police do. After all it’s our people who you are trying to get them back to mainstream.” He also felt that economic factor also plays a role in the rise of militancy.

Talking about the maintenance of general law and order problems in the state, Hanaman felt that there is a need to beef up intelligence gathering in the state. He said, “Intelligence input is important. You need to have a strong Intelligence set up and if it is not good it will be of a great disadvantage in maintenance of law and order.”

Hanaman said he will ensure that the police functions as per the police act in the maintenance of law and order and detection and prevention of crimes. He said, “If these are your priorities, I think that should be more than half of the work done.”

While conceding that the buck stop with him as far as the policing in the state is concerned, Hanaman however informed that to tackle the challenges he has an excellent teams of officers and, therefore, he is not working in isolation. He said together the police will trash problems and find a solution but informed that adequate resources are required.

A 1979 Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer, Hanaman was one among the four other senior IPS officers who were empanelled by a State Security Commission headed by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma from he was selected as the state police chief

Hanaman also said his priority is to have the rapist cop Nurul Islam face criminal charges for allegedly raping two minor sisters at a remote police station in South West Garo Hills district last month.- By Our Reporter
