SHILLONG, JAN 11: North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) assistant registrar and part time news anchor in Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR) Jaya Bhattarcharjee died in a tragic road accident early on Monday morning while two of her colleagues were injured.
The three met with the accident when their vehicle i-10 rammed into a Sumo tourist coming from the opposite direction after they were returning from Mylliem, about 15 kilometers away from Shillong, where they had gone to see early morning frost.
The accident took place at around 7 am Military hospital, police said.
Forty seven year-old Jaya Bhattacharjee was known for her active contribution in the field of media.
The other two injured have been identified as Dr Subrata Choudhry, a lecturer in the Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai and Dr Shyamnanda Bhattacharjee, an official of the North Eastern Council (NEC). They were rushed to the Shillong Civil Hospital for immediate medical attention.
According to NEHU officials, Jaya and the two others had went out early morning at around 4.30 am to see the frost of Mylliem.
Her body has been taken to her residence at Ferndale, Rapsang complex opposite SP’s office at IGP after post mortem was conducted. Officials also informed that cremation will take place tomorrow.
The news of the tragic accident came as a shock to the entire fraternity of NEHU, whereby both teaching and non-teaching staffs rushed to the hospital.
Terming the sudden demise of their faculty member as a great loss to the university, NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof SK Srivastava said, “She (Jaya) was the finest officer in the university and her demise is a severe shock to all of us…it is a huge loss for the university.”
Meanwhile, the NEHU will hold condolence meeting at the university on Tuesday.-By Our Reporter
