Hailing the decision which was as per the UGC notification issued on May 2, last year, North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) president Napoleon S Mawphniang urged the members of the committee to work judiciously and serve the interests of the employees, students and scholars of the University irrespective of gender.
He said that the Union has been actively pushing for the implementation of the UGC notification and was seriously concerned by the lack of proper internal mechanisms to prevent sexual harassment of students and scholars in the university, as several cases (reported and unreported) were seen in the recent past.
Regarding the inclusion of student representatives to the ICC, Mawphniang said, “The process is ongoing and the Union requests the administration to expedite the process as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, the NEHUSU expressed it’s displease on the failure of the NEHU administration to officially communicate to the students’ body regarding the setting up of the ICC, to which it came to know only from the university website.
“We will be closely monitoring the functioning of the ICC as per the UGC regulation and sexual harassment law, in keeping with our stated policy of fighting against sexual violence, harassment and gender inequality in the university campus and in our state as a whole,” Mawphniang said in a statement issued here on Thursday.
