SHILLONG, DEC 19: The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) has decided to withdraw the regulation of power supply to the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) with effect from December 22.
Informing this in a statement issued here on Wednesday, NEEPCO senior manager (CC) LA Kharmawphlang said, “As a gesture of seasonal goodwill to the people of Meghalaya and to ensure a fitting celebration of the ensuing festivals of Christmas and New Year, NEEPCO has decided to withdraw the regulation of power supply to Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (MePDCL) w.e.f 00.00 hours of December 22.”
Kharmawphlang said the power minister James K Sangma had requested NEEPCO for withdrawing the regulation of power supply while also making assurances for liquidating of substantial outstanding dues shortly.
The MePDCL has imposed loadshedding across the state during the past few weeks.
Earlier, the power minister had stated that the department is making efforts to clear the outstanding power dues on instalment basis to ensure that power is deregulated in the state.
He informed the pending power dues to be paid to the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) is around Rs 500 crores. Along with other central generating stations (CGS) the total pending dues is to the tune of over Rs 700 crores.
