SHILLONG, FEB 15: Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh has asserted the need for financial support of the Centre to ensure construction of the new Assembly building is completed within stipulated timeline.
Speaking to media persons on Monday, Lyngdoh said he had recently met for the second time and sought the intervention of the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla for funding the state’s new assembly building.
“I have also requested the CM after my first meeting with the Lok Sabha Speaker to meet and apprise him on the need for more funding from the central government,” he said.
Informing that the 15th Finance Commission had already recommended Rs 100 crore for the project, Lyngdoh said, “We had also got a chance to meet the union finance minister and we have requested her to consider and approve the recommendation by the 15th FC.”
Asked, he said that the state is facing huge financial constraints due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the progress of work, the Speaker informed that the progress of work is very good and that the civil work is more or less completed.
Lyngdoh also said that he was supposed to go for another round of inspection to the construction site tomorrow but had to postpone it to February 17.
He further expressed confidence that the state will be able to complete the project within the targeted timeline.
The new Assembly building is being constructed on 80 acres of land at Mawdiangdiang in the New Shillong Township.
The project amounting to Rs 127 crore has been allotted to Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd which is PSU of the Uttar Pradesh government.
