NEC to build hostels for NE students, working professional in cities

 

Shillong, Sept 3: The North Eastern Council (NEC) will be constructing hostels for the students and working professionals from the region in Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune and Mysore.

NEC secretary UK Sangma informed Monday about the decision to build a 1700-seated hostels for boys and girls in Bangalore in collaboration with the University of Bangalore.

Sangma said that state of the art hostel with all the modern facilities at an initial project cost of Rs.32.14 crore will be built at Jnana Bharati main campus to accommodate 1700 students studying in the various colleges affiliated to the Bangalore University.

The decision of building hostels in all these places came after the people belonging to the north eastern region were subjected to attack in Pune and also became victim of malicious campaign in southern states recently.

The Bangalore university,  which is the biggest in Asia, will also have special arrangements for security of all students from the region including boys, said Prof Mylarappa, the registrar of Bangalore university.

Mylarappa said there are about 9000 north eastern students in about 200 colleges affiliated to Bangalore university and majority of them are from Manipur.

Apart from Bangalore, the NEC will also build hostels for the youths in the affected locations like Mumbai, Pune and Mysore.

In Delhi University work for construction of 500-seated capacity girls’ hostel in collaboration with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs at a cost of Rs 23.33 crore is underway. A working women hostel that will accommodate 501 members has already been constructed at Jasola in association with the Ministry of Women & Child Development at a cost of Rs 17.44 crore.- By Our Reporter
