Shillong, Nov 16: National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma said that “political empowerment “is important to make the women empowerment effective and felt without political empowerment there is bound to be some problems.
Speaking to reporters at the sideline of the “Regional Conference On Empowerment of Women” at Pinewood Hotel Friday, Sharma informed that during the tenure of Pratibha Patil as the president, the NSW had submitted a memorandum asking for the 33 percent reservation for women in parliament and state legislatures.
Dwelling on women trafficking, Sharma said that the problem of trafficking is not region specific as other parts of India is also facing the same problem as the north eastern region. She informed that lots of girls are being trafficked inside India from Nepal. She said, “I have seen this when I was in Sikkim, girls from Nepal were being trafficked to different places of India.”
Sharma felt that to reduce the trafficking we must first try and change the mental make up of the people and also concentrate to educate the girls. She was of the opinion that the government and police still have to shoulder the bigger part of the responsibility in reducing trafficking of women.
Speaking on the incident of about the death of a woman and the still born child in Ireland Sharma said the India government should take up with the Irish government to ease strict abortion rule on humanitarian ground after a pregnant Indian woman’s plea for termination was repeatedly denied by an Irish hospital resulting in the death of the pregnant woman and the baby.
“Two deaths in once instance; what humanitarian ground are they(Irish government) talking about,” National Commission for Women chairperson Mamta Sharma said. She said there cannot be a law which is against humanitarian grounds.- By Our Reporter
