SHILLONG, JAN 15: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribe (NCST) has decided to write to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)on the need to look into the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement signed by the 25 Khasi states and the central government on August 17, 1948.
The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya (GCCM) chairman John F Kharshiing informed on Wednesday that the NCST chairman Dr Rameshwar Oraon informed the tribal chiefs that he would write to the Minister for Home Affairs Sushil Kumar S Shinde on this subject.
Kharshiing informed that the decision by the NCST chairman came after a detailed discussion with a delegation of eight tribal chiefs from Meghalaya who met him on January 3.
GCCM delegation had urged the Chairman of National Commission for Schedule Tribes to intervene so that the voice of the tribal governing institutions of the chiefs in a state with only (2 Lok Sabha MPs is heard by the centre.
Kharshiing informed that the delegation of chiefs also met the chief minister Mukul Sangma and handed him a copy of the letter sent by the NCST to MHA for his intervention.
Kharshiing said the GCCM informed the chief minister about KHADC discussions with the Federation of Khasi States offered to propose the constitution of a Partyless Regional Council specifically for the representatives of the Dorbar Shnong, Dorbar Raid and Dorbar Hima, and that the draft of the proposal is under preparation.
Kharshiing also said that the GCCM has resolved to send a delegation to seek appointment and meet with Union Minister for Home Affairs to press for early resolution of this national commitment and conclusion of the issues and treaties of the Khasi states, within the Constitution of India.- By Our Reporter
