SHILLONG, MAR 31: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP),the Congress led UPA II coalition partner at the centre –decided to support the two Congress candidates for the Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha constituencies in the ensuing April 9-Lok Sabha elections.
NCP national president Sharad Pawar and general secretary Praful Patel, who is also in-charge of the north eastern states, directed NCP Meghalaya state unit to support the Congress candidates.
NCP East Khasi hills district president Wallambok Lyngdoh told reporters at a joint news conference on Monday.
In his letter addressed to Meghalaya NCP unit president Sanbor Shullai, NCP permanent secretary and member working committee SR Kohli said that Pawar in consultation with its Patel decided not to field any candidates from NCP in Meghalaya parliamentary elections and suggested that the party state unit support the congress candidates.
The Congress has fielded sitting MP Vincent H Pala from Shillong parliamentary seat and new entrant Daryl William Cheran Momin, grandson of Meghalaya’s first chief minister Captain Williamson Sangma for Tura seat.
Appealing to its supporters to support the Congress, Lyngdoh said, “We hope with our support to both the candidates, the Congress will sail through in the two seats in the ensuing elections.”
While expressing gratitude to the NCP high command, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) vice president Oris Lyngdoh said, “Although NCP and Congress are running in different lines but both are secular in nature and share identical ideologies.”
The Congress vice president said the party thanks the NCP for taking this stand and surely this will give a good signal when the party go to the field hand in hand with the NCP which will in turn help in forming the UPA – III at the centre.
The Congress leader expressed hoped that other political parties who are like minded and secular will also support the Congress in the elections.
Oris Lyngdoh said, “This is a very critical period in the history of the country, so we would also like to have partnership with other political parties.” – By Our Reporter
