NCP merger with NPP complete, Sangma promises to work for tribal aspirations

Shillong, August 24:  Meghalaya unit of the Nationalist Congress Party merged with National People’s Party (NPP)at a grand function Friday held at lower Lachumiere Friday as its leader PA Sangma  said that though the  party is for everyone but it is tribal and OBC centric.

Former deputy union minister Arvind Mehta and NPP Manipur unit president V Hangkhanlian were also present at the merger function.

Sangma is all set to take over as the president of the NPP which is a political party from Manipur. Soon the party will shift its headquarter from Imphal in Manipur to Delhi so as to give the NPP a pan-Indian presence.

Of the fourteen NCP legislators, twelve of them have joined the NPP while Adolf Lu Hitler Marak and Sanbor Shullai refused to be part of the merger. Sangma two sons – Conrad Sangma and James Sangma- are prominent members of the new NPP in the state. However, Sangma’s youngest daughter who is an NCP Tura Lok Sabha MP and union minister of State Agatha Sangma and Rajya Sabha MP Thomas Sangma will continue with the NCP.

Speaking about his tenure in the Congress party, Sangma said that he was the most powerful man in the party and not a single file used to go without his approval. To quote him Sangma said, “Everyone used to tremble before me. Yet, I quit that party not for any bigger post, but for my principle. I am joining the NPP again based on my principles.”

Justifying Sangma decision of leaving the NCP, joining NPP and merging the Meghalaya unit of NCP with the party from Manipur Sangma said tribal population across the country have not been given their socio-political due so the NPP would try to give fulfil the tribal aspirations.

Sangma felt that if the 57 tribal MPs and 529 legislators came together nobody could touch then and launching the NPP is  a step towards uniting the tribal of the country.

The newly Meghalaya NPP unit leader and opposition leader Conrad K Sangma informed that all the twelve NCP legislators met Speaker, Charles Pyngrope and formally handed over the letter of NCP’s merger with the NPP.

Commenting on the decision for merger with the NPP the junior Sanmg said, “All we are doing is putting on “new-jersey” of the same team”.- By Our Reporter
