NCP demands police post in Psiar village

SHILLONG, DEC 13The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday demanded the setting up of a police outpost in Psiar village in the disputed Block-I area near the border with Assam to prevent communal violence from taking place.

“Setting up of the police outpost in Psiar village is needed to address the various problems faced by the people living along the inter-state border,” NCP legislator E. C. B. Bamon told the Assembly. Villagers from the several rural pockets in the area like Psiar, Moolber and Khatkasla, he said, are compelled to pay taxes for their agricultural produce to the Assam-based militant outfits.

Home Minister H. D. R. Lyngdoh disclosure that the government had not initiated any step to put up the outpost at Psiar in the absence of public demand and low crime rate in the village raised the eyebrows of the legislators sitting on the Opposition benches. NCP legislator James Sangma said prevention of possible communal violence in the sensitive border area should be the reason for setting up of the outpost and not the low crime rate prevailing there. Leader of the Opposition Conrad K Sangma added: “I am surprised by such a reply. The government should take steps to prevent such incidents by setting up the outpost, and not wait till our people get killed.”

MTC staff salaries: The state government on Thursday said a part of the pending salaries of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation staff will be released before Christmas.

Replying to a query raised by leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Conrad K Sangma, transport Minister A. T. Mondal assured that at least two months’ salaries of the employees will be released. Raising the issue, Sangma said it was unfortunate that the MTC staff has not been given their salaries for the past five months. (By Our Reporter)
