SHILLONG, MAY 18: Eminent legal professionals from across the country including north east will converge in the state capital to attend a two-day national seminar, which will be held for the first time in this part of the region from May 20-21.
The national seminar-“Current challenges before the legal profession and the judiciary” to be held at Soso Tham auditorium is being organized by the Bar Association of India (BAI) jointly with the Shillong High Court Bar Association.
Addressing pressmen on Wednesday, Advocate General of Meghalaya Dr BP Todi said, “The national seminar is aimed at for the greater interest and benefit of the legal fraternity including teachers and students.”
Eminent legal experts from the different parts of the country including R Malavi, a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India are expected to participate in the upcoming seminar.
States from the North East – Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura and Assam have also registered.
“Over 320 members have also registered from Shillong, Jowai, Nongpoh and Khliehriat,” informed Dr Todi, who is also Member of the BAI’s Executive Committee.
Stating the seminar has been divided into four sessions, he said topic relating to rich legal tapestry of North East India: a glimpse into the local customary laws and practice in Meghalaya will be discussed in the two day event.
Besides the seminar will also be discussing on the topics – one Bar one India: Role of the Bar Association of India to help the local bar and the profession in the North East, recent arbitration amendment and commercial courts act and role of judiciary in bringing up young bar.
SHCBA president GS Massar also informed that different committees have been constituted to ensure that the seminar is successfully conducted.
According to him, though there has been problem of funds but donors including the state government have come forward to extend a helping hand to the association.
Meanwhile, the seminar will be inaugurated by the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court Dinesh Maheshwari in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Law Rowell Lyngdoh. The Governor, V Shanmuganathan, will also be releasing the souvenir of the SHCBA during the valedictory function on May 21.-By Our Reporter
