SHILLONG, AUG 6: VPP candidate Prof Batskhem Myrboh on Thursday said the party is confident of winning the upcoming MP byelection, citing growing public backing and a clear political strategy.
“We know our own politics, we know our issues and our strength. I don’t see any threat. We are confident of winning the election,” Myrboh told reporters.
He said the VPP’s support in Khasi and Jaintia Hills is expanding because people are drawn to the party’s principles, not inducements.
“VPP supporters back us because they understand our policies and our commitment to clean politics and the interests of the people.
On that basis, we have not only retained support but increased it,” he said.
Pointing to the party’s trajectory since 2021, Myrboh said the VPP has grown rapidly.
“The party has grown tremendously. In a few years we have won elections and taken people’s issues forward. The facts speak for the credibility and strength of the party,” he added.
He dismissed reports of mass resignations as “exaggerated,” and said the party continues to attract new members.
“Let the results of the MP byelection speak for itself,” he said.
On the recent protest at the Secretariat, Myrboh said turnout reflected voluntary support.
“We never provide financial support. Whoever is free comes. We are grateful and satisfied with the numbers,” he said.
Asked about raising issues on the streets instead of in the Assembly, he echoed VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit.
“Politics and democracy is a continuous process. Legitimacy is also a continuous bargaining process. Politics and democracy exist and operate beyond the institutions,” he said.
Myrboh said the VPP will now focus on campaigning for the byelection and taking people’s issues to the government.
“These are significant issues for the people of the state. The government has to respond. We are the channel to express those issues,” he stated.
