MPYC VP allege MLAs supporting MDA govt for ‘personal development’

SHILLONG, MAR 1: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) vice president Banphira Lang Basaiawmoit on Tuesday said that the Congress is strong in spite of the exodus of 17 legislators.

“We still have a vibrant team. We are not promising the luxuries of life but we want to make a commitment to the people that whatever we do is for the betterment (of the younger generation of the state),” Basaiawmoit told reporters.

He said that people leaving the party is an issue but they are dealing with the situation. “We will come up with solutions and solutions are coming up every now and then so we are not worried about it,” he added.

When asked if the exodus will not affect the Congress in 2023, the youth leader said he could only see “personal development” taking place among the legislators who deserted the Congress.

“When they (MLAs left and) supported the government, they said that the people in their constituencies needed more development but what we have seen and heard is that development for the constituencies is not there but personal development has taken place. They have been given places in the cabinet, they have been given places and offer places everywhere so we can read between the lines,” he said.

Expressing confidence that the Congress will win a good number of seats in 2023, Basaiawmoit said that the youth leaders are working to strengthen the party as part of the preparation for the polls.

“With the youths that we have now we are more concerned about the roots of the party, yes flowers will perish, the fruits will fall but our roots are strong,” he said while informing that new leaders are joining the party and will give a tough fight in the elections next year.

According to him, the party is preparing to field candidates from all the 60 seats.

When asked, Basaiawmoit said, “The president (of MPYC) is contesting the election but I will not because we already have a candidate in Mylliem constituency. We have a very genuine candidate who is a strong party man and with what he has done for the party we are confident that we are winning and winning is not just about winning the electoral politics, we are winning the hearts of the people based on the issues that people have faced and we are we are connected to the grassroots in a very strong way.”
