SHILLONG, MAY 9: The Meghalaya Peoples Human Rights Council (MPHRC) has urged the Meghalaya government to immediately constitute a magisterial enquiry committee to probe all custodial deaths in the state, and submit its findings to the National Human Rights Commission.
Terming the incidents of custodial deaths as a gross negligence of duty on the part of the police, the MPHRC called for initiating departmental proceedings against erring police officials and appropriate disciplinary action taken against them.
Referring to the alleged case of suicide by a person in police lock-up at Khliehriat police station, the rights body said this goes to prove that the police have failed to prevent such incidents from taking place. Roi Simpli(20) had allegedly hung himself from the grill of the ventilation inside the police lockup with the help of his nylon T-shirt at Khliehriat. (By Our Reporter)
