SHILLONG, MAY 9: Though the state government has revoked the MPDA imposed on the ngos members who were arrested during the Inner Line Permit (ILP) agitations, but their release will now depend on the court.
The pro ILP ngos had demanded the unconditional and immediate release of its three members who were booked under MPDA. Two of those arrested are KSU activists Johny Sohkhlet and Readytonstone Nongrum while the third is HNYF member Everson Syngkon
Home department official said that the state government revoked the MPDA under which the arrested members of the ngos were booked to facilitate the ngos demand; however the ngos will have to move the court for their release.
The official informed the decision to revoke the MPDA was political but releasing the members of the ngos is a legal matter that only the court will decide. He said the ngos, however, now can move for bail of their members in the court.
East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang informed that the ILP activists were arrested under section 436 IPC, 302 IPC and 120 (b) MMPO Act which pertains to arsons, murder and conspiracy. He said even though the MPDA has been revoked, but releasing them will entirely be the decision of the court.- By Our Reporter
