SHILLONG, SEPT 1: East Khasi hills district administration has prohibiting hawkers and pedestrians from using the over bridge at Motphran after the latter shows signs of distress. “Movement of pedestrians and selling of clothes by hawkers over the bridge is prohibited,” additional district magistrate Cyril VD Diengdoh said in his order issued on Monday.
Diengdoh said the over bridge at Motphran which is used by pedestrians for movement from Iewduh end to Mawkhar end is in a distressed condition due to its old age and that the use of the bridge should be stopped immediately.
According to him, the major component of the bridge like pier (steel columns) has become weak as sign of twisting of thin walled section was observed and it may further progress due to over loading or during seismic event.
“If movement of pedestrians or selling of clothes by hawkers is allowed over the bridge, it may collapse at any time,” Diengdoh said.
Diengdoh further stated that due to the urgency of the matter, it is necessary to take steps to prevent movement of pedestrians and selling of clothes or any other items by hawkers on the over bridge at Motphran for the interest and safety of the public at large.- By Our Reporter
