SHILLONG, JULY 10: Meghalaya urban affairs department will soon write to the union government to allot more buses and maxi taxis under the 13th finance commission so that it can expand its public transport system in Meghalaya. The public transport buses operated by Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has come as a breather to the public as it has helped in streamlining the pathetic public transport system of city when commuters were over charged by local taxis.
Urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh told reporters that the state government is working out a proposal to be submitted to the union government for allocating more buses since Shilllong city still needs better public transport system
Lyngdoh informed that the union government had allocated 134 buses and 127 maxi taxis for the state under the 13th finance commission.
“In the last meeting our officers had put a presentation before the union government officials and they had appreciated the services and they had also assured of further augmenting the public transport system in Meghalaya.” Lyngdoh said.
Lyngdoh informed that the government plans to connect all the localities of the city through the buses and maxi taxis during the next allocation of buses to the state.
The government also plans to expand the services in other urban towns of the state even though demands are continuously pouring in for introduction of the services in rural areas but the buses and maxi-taxi are meant only for urban transport system. –By Our Reporter
