SHILLONG, OCT 10: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) national secretary in-charge North East Narendra Verma today claimed more and more senior leaders of different political parties are joining the NCP in Meghalaya ahead of the upcoming 2018 assembly elections.
“There will be lots of political happenings in the coming days,” Verma, who is also NCP national spokesperson, told reporters after reviewing the party’s poll preparedness at a meeting held in the city here on Tuesday.
Refusing to disclose details, he however said there are certain things which need to be open up at the right time.
“But you will know in the coming days,” Verma said while referring to the political scenario especially within the ruling Congress in which its leaders are leaving the party, which according to him was due to the failure in the performance of the Congress.
Maintaining that NCP will not tied up with any political parties in the upcoming elections, the national leader said, “We have decided not to go for pre-poll alliance but alone after seeing the overwhelming response and enthusiasm of the people towards the party.”
He revealed that many former MLAs and senior leaders from the different political parties are joining the party.
Verma however categorically made it clear that the NCP is open for post-poll alliance with like minded parties to form the new government in the state.
Announcing that the process of distribution of application forms for allotment of party tickets to aspirants has started with effect from today and will be closed on November 30, he said the party will also hold a state convention meeting on October 21.
“NCP national general secretary Praful Patel will be addressing the state convention of the party which will be held at Tura, West Garo Hills District. Besides other national leaders will also be visiting the state soon,” he said.
On the party’s preparedness, Verma said that the party for the last few months have been engaging in organizational strengthening of the party. “Now, the NCP is totally gearing up for the forthcoming elections,” he added.
On the other hand, the NCP state president Sanbor Shullai said that the party is hopeful to be able to field candidates from all the 60 assembly constituencies which include 36 in Khasi-Jaintia Hills region and 24 in Garo Hills region.
“However, if we cannot field in all the 60 seats, we will definitely put up candidates in not less than 40 to 45 seats,” Shullai said.
Stating that ticket allotment will be based on ‘winnability factor’, the party state chief said, “We will not allot ticket to any Tom, Dick or Harry like in the last elections where some candidates could secure only 200-300 votes.”
According to him, therefore the application forms to be submitted by ticket aspirants will be carefully examined by the party’s central election committee. “There will also be members who will scrutinize the same based on winnability,” he said.
