Mookhep firing: Fresh probe

SHILLONG, MAR 13: The state government has instituted a ‘fresh inquiry’ to probe into the September 24, 2014 – Mookhep firing in East Jaintia hills where two civilians were killed. The fresh inquiry has been instituted after rejecting earlier report submitted by the magisterial inquiry.

“We have instituted a fresh inquiry to be headed by Urban affairs department commissioner and secretary DP Wahlang. Notification to this has also been issued,” chief minister Mukul Sangma told the assembly in his reply during the question hour on Friday.

Sangma informed that the decision was taken after the magisterial inquiry report has not been accepted by the government.  He said, “The report has not been accepted by the government as the findings are of no consequence.”

To a query raised by the UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh on the reason behind the rejection, Sangma said, “When we received the report, its recommendation did not give any definite conclusion, as per the term of reference in the notification issued by the government.”

Two civilians were shot dead while several injured during the firing incident which took place at Mookhep village in East Jaintia hills district on September 24, last year while there was a against the ban on coal mining imposed by the NGT in the state.- By Our Reporter
