SHILLONG, NOV 9: Shillong and other districts of the state were jolted by the sudden surgical strike on black money banning Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes by the union government from midnight as confusion prevails all over and people with only Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination notes had difficult times.

Following the demonetizing of the Rs 500 & Rs 1000 notes,  the market on Wednesday morning outrightly rejected accepting the notes.

When a customer, who was confused as what to do since he had only Rs 500 in his pocket and could not use it to buy some essential commodities, pleaded with the shopkeeper the latter told him that he would not accept as the note is banned.

“How can I take when these notes are banned. I feel bad but I can’t help it,” a shopkeeper in Nongrim Hills told this reporter.

This reporter also visited some of the hospitals in the city and found that the respective managing bodies however had already issued clear instruction to accept the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes to ensure that no inconveniences is caused to the patients.

However some petrol pumps have refused to accept when Rs 500 note was given to them for refill of petrol.

A concerned citizen said, “It is an unusual experience though I have money but I cannot use it. I have cash but it is useless.”

He however said that the centre decision is a welcome step but the timing somewhat caught the people by surprise.

All the banks and financial institutions besides ATM remained closed following the Centre decision that was announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

East Khasi hills deputy commissioner PS Dkhar appealed to all citizens to approach their respective banks for exchanging of the banned notes.

“That is the only way out,” Dkhar said while informing that the district administration will extend support to ensure law and order situation is maintained.-By Our Reporter
