Modern police academy to be setup soon, saying outgoing DGP Ramachandran

Shillong, Oct 31: Outgoing Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) N Ramachandran revealed that Meghalaya police efforts and energies have been directed towards fighting militancy in Garo hills even as he said that soon Meghalaya would have the privilege of housing a modern police academy which will be an institution of excellence for police training.

Addressing the farewell parade Wednesday morning at the Police Training School, Ramachandran said that Garo hills region of the state have been reeling under militancy and the Meghalaya police have been engaged in neutralizing the militant organizations.

Ramachandran who had a completed his thirteen months stint as the Meghalaya DGP before he retired on Wednesday expressed his satisfaction over the effectiveness of the state intelligency agency and the security machinery fighting militancy. He said, “We have
come a long way I feel happy today that we have been able to  revamp the state intelligence effectively and the security machinery to deal with militancy.” He said the Meghalaya police is a confident police force today.

Ramachandran served in the police for 34 years and was
attached with Assam police in his early days later he for about 14 years was posted in the Special Protection Group which guards VVIPs and had served eight successive prime ministers of the
country.

Ramachandran said that the state police have also strengthened the Special Weapons And Tactical (SWAT) teams fighting militancy effectively along with the CRPF’s CoBRA. He was of the opinion that the security forces have
several spectacular successes fighting militancy. He praised the special forces for showing courage and determination fighting the militants which deserved accolades.
Ramachandran also spoke highly of the district police officers saying  equally praiseworthy is the perseverance,  courage and determination shown by district SPs, some young DSPs, ASPs, OCs of police stations, inspectors, sub-Inspectors, constables and every
other rank of Meghalaya police fighting militancy. He said, “I feel proud to see their
accomplishments, and happy that the state police have been able to prevent many
militant attacks and save many innocent lives.”

Speaking about the setting up of  police academy Ramachandran informed that the state police are in the process of setting up of a modern  police academy for which the 13th Finance Commission has granted Rs. 50 crores. He said, “This academy will be set up as an institution of excellence in police training and we should ensure that this institution is carefully nurtured to meet the training requirements of the State Police.”-By Our Reporter
