SHILLONG, APR 15: An angry mob thrashed five extortionists in Daram which resulted in the dead of one while injuring three others seriously. The incident took place on Monday night in Daram near Resubelpara, the district headquarter of North Garo hills.
The mob fury came about a month after three extortionists were killed near Adokgre, in the same district.
According to the police the incident took place at about 8:15 pm at Daram Bazar. The five extortionists were travelling in an auto and were returning after they had illegally collected money when they were stopped by angry villagers who were informed about their movements.
Sensing danger one of the five managed to flee. The others however were rounded up by the angry villagers and gave them a sound thrashing. The angry mob also vented their anger on the auto rickshaw the extortionists were travelling as they destroyed it.
North Garo Hill SP Jerry Marak said his team rushed to the spot after they were informed about the incident. He informed when the police team reached the spot it was deserted. He however added, “We found the three of them lying on the ground badly injured and immediately rushed them to the Resubelpara CHC. The fourth extortionists was found about 200 metres away and was in critical state,” he said.
The four extortionists have been identified as Simseng Momin of Gindapasari under Resubelpara, Uttom Marak, Silsrang Sangma and Sengbat Momin (all from Dame Apal). The police said that Silsrang Sangma succumbed to the injuries while the other three are in very critical conditions.
Marak said, “All the three have been referred to Goalpara Hospital as their conditions are very bad.” The auto rickshaw they were travelling in was discovered in the Daram playground. Police are investigating into the incident.- By Our Reporter
