SHILLONG, APR 15: A mob destroyed four houses at Wahswat, a disputed land in Ri Bhoi district bordering East Khasi Hills district, after the Meghalaya high court passed a verdict in favour of the Raid Tynring which got possession of the land thereby agitating those who had challenged it.
The mob consisted of villagers from four villages who were instigated by the leaders. The mob went and destroyed the four houses rendering their families homeless on Monday night.
“Hundreds of angry villagers led by leaders of Dorbar Shnongs of the four villages – Lumdiengngan, Mawkduk, Wahmyntait and Kyrdem- under Raid Tynring came all of a sudden and started to destroy our houses and properties without any reason or notice,” one of the victims told reporters in Shillong.
The houses destroyed by the mob belongs to Thyrmai Nongrum, Iohkynti Myrboh, Phider Nongrum and Kjiarsila Nongrum.
The families had been staying in Wahswat after getting permission from the sordar of Raid Tynring Ikom Diengdoh. According to the victims, the land in Wahswat is a community land under Raid Tynring.
The victim said the mob fury followed a verdict court on March 31 where it had ruled the land dispute in favour of the Sordar of Raid Tynring. The issue on the land dispute between the Raid Tynring and the four villages started since 2010.
The affected families have lodged an FIR in Khapmara police outpost, Umiam on Tuesday against the leaders of the four villages which include headman and secretary of Mawkduk W Nongdhar and K Shylla, K Kharkongor from Lumdiengngan and others for having instigated the mob to destroy their houses.
It is also learnt the headman of Mawkduk is also a school teacher in Lumkseh.- By Our Reporter
