SHILLONG, SEPT 20: Garo National Council (GNC) legislator Clifford R Marak has threatened to stage an indefinite hunger strike if the state government fails to release the arrested volunteers of the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) ‘unconditionally’ before September 25.
“The state government should release all the twenty five GHSMC volunteers unconditionally before September 25,” Marak told reporters on Friday reading out from an open letter addressed to chief minister Mukul Sangma.
If the government fails to release them, Marak said he will be compelled to go for an indefinite hunger strike in front of the chief minister’s residence at Hawakhana (Ampati) on September 26.He was of the opinion that members of the GHSMC were democratically demanding for a separate Garoland when they were arrested on filmsy grounds such as alleged molestation on September 12.
Rejecting the allegations leveled by West Garo hills deputy commissioner, Marak questioned how could this happen inside the DC office during broad daylight. He said, “If there is molestation then the person should have immediately gone to police and file an FIR. But so far there has been no FIR filed with the police station as far as this matter is concerned.”
Saying the allegation is trumped up, Marak suspected that the entire situation is being directed by the chief minister so actions against the members of the movement are taken.
Marak also reminded that in 1967 no public or students were arrested during the hill state movement when volunteers even prevented the vehicle of the DC from entering his office premises.- By Our Reporter
